Well, what are writers supposed to do then? Not encourage other people to keep moving forward despite the odds? It would be very discouraging and depressing for every article to have a pessimistic tone to it, and many readers want some form of encouragement, even if it’s from random strangers/writers.

I personally don’t think it’s about making another person “expect too much,” like they “will” achieve success. Rather, it’s more about telling someone to not give up, because then they will achieve nothing at all. Sometimes it’s nice to have that extra push from a fellow writer who also struggled. It’s also more relatable, and it’s nice to hear how they pulled through their tough times in life. Because we’re all going through something. But it’s also up to us to make choices that will make our future (as a writer) better.

That being said, most of the articles on Medium are about self-help. If it’s causing you to feel annoyed, then you already know that you don’t have to read them. Ultimately, it should be up to you to keep writing. And if doesn’t bring you joy, or you’re constantly needing validation from others to keep going, then maybe a different hobby or route in life would be better, which is completely OK.
